PSLE - English Syllabus

The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) English syllabus set by the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) aims to develop students' proficiency in English language skills, focusing on communication, comprehension, and expression. It is designed to ensure students have a strong foundation in English to prepare them for secondary education and beyond.

Key Components:

  1. Listening Comprehension
Students listen to a variety of spoken texts and demonstrate understanding by answering questions. Skills assessed include listening for main ideas, specific information, inference, and interpreting tone or attitude.

  2. Oral Communication
This includes reading aloud to demonstrate fluency and accuracy, as well as stimulus-based conversation where students respond thoughtfully to given prompts or situations, showcasing speaking skills, vocabulary, and grammar usage.

  3. Reading Comprehension
Students read passages of varied genres and answer questions to show understanding of main ideas, details, vocabulary, inference, and critical thinking.

  4. Writing
The writing component covers both continuous writing (narrative or descriptive essays) and situational writing (letters, emails, notes). Students demonstrate the ability to organize ideas coherently, use appropriate vocabulary and grammar, and adapt writing style to different contexts and audiences.

Objectives:

  • Develop confident and effective communication in English.

  • Enhance comprehension skills across multiple formats.

  • Foster creativity and clarity in writing.

  • Build vocabulary, grammar, and language conventions proficiency.
